Dental School Web Accessibility

At the School of Dentistry, we aim to make our web pages as usable and accessible as possible.

Go to BrowseAloud Home Page. (Opens in new window)People with dyslexia, visual difficulties, literacy difficulties, English as a second language.
To help you if you have any of these difficulties, the School of Dentistry has teamed up with BrowseAloud. Browsealoud is a free program that sits on your desktop, which will read our web pages to you through your computer's loudspeakers or your headphones .

BrowseAloud is available for Windows and Mac. Click here to download BrowseAloud .

Text Version
For people with serious visual difficulties, a text version of the School's web site is available for use with automated readers like Jaws and/or text-only browsers like Lynx. Images are replaced by text equivalents. Use the "Text Version" link near the top of the page to enable this feature. Please note that currently this facility is limited to the School of Dentistry web site only.

Colour Vision Deficiency (Colour Blindness)
Our pages are tested to ensure they are fully readable by people with colour deficient vision. In our ecourse, we are working to make all our histology pictures clearer to colour-blind people by providing alternative images that have been optimised (re-coloured).

Large text sizes.
Where possible, our pages do not use fixed size type faces. You can increase the size of the type using your browser controls. In most web browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer) this is done by going to the 'View' menu and selecting the 'Text size' option. Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer 7 allow you to magnify the entire page.

Navigation using a keyboard and access keys
If you use a keyboard to navigate web sites there are access keys that you can use as shortcuts. We have provided access keys in the government standard.

Text Equivalents
Pictures in our web site have "Alternative Text" to provide a textual equivalent for the picture. If the picture is merely decorative, the text equivalent may be for example "Image of the School of Dentistry". If the picture is a hyperlink, it will give more information, for example "Go to our research pages", which can be understood by a screen reader.
Normal hyperlinks that are not self-explanatory will have a text "Title" saying where they go, to enable screen readers to understand them.

Video Captioning
Our ecourse contains many videos: captioning is provided for use in quiet areas as well as to aid people with hearing difficulties.
