SUBSEQUENT REVIEWS
Primary and master impressions are usually taken to make sure the oral tissues are recorded as accurately as possible that the denture will need as little adjustment as possible at the insertion and 24 hour review stage.
PRIMARY IMPRESSIONS
Usually taken in alginate, unless severe undercuts are present in which case elastomers are used instead. Using a stock tray results in an inaccurate impression of the mouth, therefore master impressions must follow this stage. The size of tray, which is selected, should be of adequate size so as to cover the entire intended denture bearing area. The stock tray peripheries should be reduced or extended as necessary to provide enough information for the construction of a special tray.
SECONDARY IMPRESSIONS
If the undercuts are small to moderate then alginate is used, but if the undercuts are severe then elastomers are used. The tray should be carefully examined to make sure it is well adapted and correctly extended. The impression is then taken and cast. This impression should be detailed enough so the technician can carry out the next stages of denture construction. It is very important that the master impression captures the oral tissues very accurately so when the technician removes the selected teeth from the cast, the resulting shape of ridge is related to the post extraction shape.
