The School of Dentistry, University of Birmingham

is internationally leading in a number of areas of its research, reflecting our goal to provide a robust and innovative scientific base for clinical application and translation of our research.

We have worked hard to successfully establish a strong profile of researchers in Dentistry through strategic management of activity and rigorous research training programmes. A number of researchers have leading international reputations resulting from their published outputs and broader research activities and many are establishing such reputations. Focus on management of research activity, infrastructural development, robust training through basic-clinical scientist partnerships and emphasis on translation of our research and relevance to end-users has ensured a strong future for oral and dental research at Birmingham.

Three theme areas

Biomaterials – particularly, mechanistic research on adhesive, ceramic and tissue engineering scaffold materials and their performance

Primary Dental Care – including innovative introduction of practice-based research networks facilitating translational research within the primary care setting (now adopted in a $70 Million initiative by NIH in the US)

Tissue Injury & Repair – including novel stem cell and signalling solutions to dentine-pulp regeneration and development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for periodontal diseases, based upon improved understanding of their patho-biology.
